Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 17, 1706. He was the fifteenth child in a family of seventeen kids. His parents, Josiah and Abiah Franklin, were hard working devout Puritan/Calvinist people. Josiah Franklin made candles for a living. Since the Franklins were so poor, little Benjamin couldn't afford to go to school for longer than two years. In those two years, however, Franklin learned to read which opened the door to further education for him. Since he was only a fair writer and had very poor mathematical skills, he worked to tutor himself at home. Benjamin Franklin was a determined young man. As a boy, he taught himself to be a very good writer. He also learned basic algebra and geometry, navigation, grammar, logic, and natural and physical science. When he was 12-years-old, he was apprentice to his brother in printing. Benjamin's brother founded the second newspaper in America. Until the recent fiasco in the 2000 Florida presidential election, most people accepted the Electoral College as a fair way to decide a future president. In truth, the Electoral College has always been imbalanced and unfair. It was originally designed in Article II of the Constitution, so that each state receives an elector for every senator (two per state) and representative (number based on population). The way in which Electors were chosen was left up to the individual states. Each elector would vote for two candidates, and whoever received a simple majority (one half plus one votes) would become the next president. Whoever received the second most votes became vice president (Kimberling). After the Election of 1800, the Fourth Amendment introduced the idea of a vice president and president ticket. In addition, the amendment said that if a candidate did n ot receive an absolute majority in the Electoral College then the House of Representatives decided the next president. Presently all states choose their electors via statewide popular vote, and one presidential candidate receives all the electoral votes from each state (Kimberling). Bullying has been around for as long as social acceptance has been important to the human race. Only recently, however, has it come front and center as a major problem taking place throughout the country. With this sudden change in the way we perceive bullying I asked of our readers to send in a store involving them or someone they know and love, that affect them in deep and maybe lasting ways. Needless to say, I got a glut of responses, some great, all heart wrenching. So, as promised I will be printing some of these deeply personal letters in place of my column for the coming weeks. As a person who has experienced firsthand the effect of bullying it is my mission to shine a light on this problem, and do anything I can to stop it. Without further ado, I give you the first of many letters that I hope will show just how traumatic bullying can be. As a kid, I was bullied a lot. I was an awkward, overweight nine-year-old how had just moved to a new school district. One out in the rural suburban area of Pittsburgh, PA. So, needless to say I wasn’t the most popular kid in school. In fact, from my own observation I was the third least popular.
